Beauty in the Eyes of the Beholder

My definition of beauty, along with my standards, has changed since becoming a mom. I went from dresses and jeans to sweatpants and an oversized t-shirt. I went from fro, twist-outs, and braids to ponytails and buns. Just so we are clear, I am plain Jane-ing it out here. My thoughts on dressing up go to my daughter, and I honestly think of myself last.

I am sure someone out there is rolling their eyes and thinking “how commendable of you. A mother putting her child first. Let’s give her a round of applause.”

First, more mothers should be recognized for all of their efforts. I respect the mothers working full-time and taking care of their children. Ladies, you are the G.O.A.T. I have no idea how you do it.

Second, my reason for stating this is to say this parenting life is not easy. Most times, it doesn’t leave time for glamming up or being on fleek. This world puts unspoken expectations on mothers to succeed at home, work, and beauty.

Willing to be transparent about this, most times I don’t feel like getting dressed up. You most likely catch me in my pajamas and my bonnet, chilling with my baby girl. I will also admit that I don’t feel pretty when I dress like this. After reading this card, 1 Peter 3:3-4 came to mind:

3 Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. 4 Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight.

My prayer for myself and everyone reading this post is to not get caught up in what is on the outside. That our inner selves are so beautiful that it shines through. Let us not forget to take care of ourselves, but remember to feed our physical and spiritual selves every day. Father, remind us that it is not what we wear that matters, but it is our intentions which lie in our hearts. Let them be pure in Your sight. In Jesus’ name, I pray and ask this.

Sincerely Your Sister,

JJJ.
